What is Microsclerotherapy?

Picture
Microsclerotherapy is the ‘gold standard’ cosmetic treatment to help reduce the fine, spidery red veins visible on the legs, called thread veins. These are distinct from varicose veins which are lumpy and easily felt, especially when standing up. The treatment involves a series of injections with a soapy solution to break down the walls of the superficial veins. On your consultation your veins will be assessed for suitability for treatment, then you will be measured up for compression hosiery (or if you happen to already have some, you may bring those with you).
How aften should I have treatment?

You should plan for 2-3 sessions repeated at 8-12 weeks apart. Then it is advisable to repeat the treatment once a year, in the spring to be ready for the summer months.

Does it hurt?

Microsclerotherapy involves a series of gentle injections with small needles. The treatment feels a bit like a nettle sting. The discomfort is not prolonged and ceases when treatment is completed. Your legs may feel tender or bruised for one to two weeks after treatment.
What are the side effects of a microsclerotherapy?

The veins that have been treated will look worse before they get better, this is normal. The thin wall of those superficial veins become red and angry and slowly start to break down over the next 4-6 weeks. You should notice a gradual fading of the veins.
Rarely, for some cases the treatment is ineffective and could cause a small break out of further capillaries at the injection site.
As we are injecting into the veins there is a very small risk of DVT (deep vein thrombosis). This risk may be increased if there is a family history of DVT or you have had a previous DVT.
Ulcers are extremely rare but can occur if you scratch or pick the areas after treatment.
Finally the last side effect from treatment is called staining: this occurs when the legs have been exposed to harmful UV rays. The injection points may darken slightly, this will gradually fade over a period of time.
What should I do or not do after microsclerotherapy treatment?

At the injection sites, cotton wool balls will be tapped all over the legs. These cotton wool balls promote the spread of the sclerosant to ensure a greater spread along the fine veins. You will be asked to wear the compression hosiery continuously for 24 hours then every day for a week. The cotton wool balls may be removed the following morning after treatment in the shower, ensure that you are gentle to the areas, no vigorous rubbing or scrubbing of the legs is advised. You will be asked to do a short 15-30 minute walk immediately after treatment, this is to reduce the risk of DVT. You will be seen in the clinic after 3 weeks for a post treatment follow up.
How long does the treatment take?

A microsclerotherapy treatment takes approximately 45 mins.
