Anti-wrinkle treatments

What is Botox/Dysport/Xeomin?

Picture
Botulinum toxin is the most popular treatment to help reduce and smooth fine lines and wrinkles around the forehead and eyes. It can also be effective in reducing persistent and frequent headaches.

At Simply Skin we use Dysport. Botox can be made available on request: both products are botulinum toxin A. Dysport and Botox are made from purified protein or modified proteins. They both function in the same way: blocking the pathway from nerve to muscle preventing muscle contraction. This stops the skin from creasing and allows the skin to smoothen, resulting in a softening of those fine lines and wrinkles.

There are many clients who would like to try a botulinum toxin treatment but are concerned that they may be left with “the frozen look”. If this is one of your concerns then please discuss it with Debbie as all injectable treatments should be aimed at creating natural and unobtrusive improvements. The treatment can be staged to ensure a gentle approach and there is always the option to have a small area treated so that you can get a feel for the results.

Please note that if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breast feeding or have egg protein allergy then this treatment may not be suitable for you. Please discuss this at consultation.
How often will I need treatment?

If you are having Dysport/Botox for the first time the advice will be to repeat at 4 months then once every 6 months after that. You may experience a small amount of movement to the areas previously treated but the movement that returns should not be as strong.
If you would not like to see any return of movement then you may decided to repeat treatment every 4 months.
There is a small study gaining interest that suggests taking a vitamin c and zinc supplement can increase the effects of the botulinum toxin protein.
What are the side effects of a Dysport/Botox treatment?

The most common complaint after treatment is a headache or heaviness to the brow. This typically lasts for a few hours after treatment. There is a small chance of slight bruising, particularity around the eyes but this should be easily covered with makeup. You may have small pinpoint redness at the injection site, this usually disappears after a few minutes.

What should I do or not do after a treatment with Dysport/Botox?
  • Please do not rub the area
  • Do not lie down for the next 2 to 3 hours after treatment.
  • Please do not partake in any heavy cardio type activity or yoga after treatment. Brisk walking is advised if you feel the need to exercise
  • The following day you may return to your normal schedule of activity.
How long does it take?

This procedure can be done in a 30 minute appointment and on the same day as the first consultation where time allows.
The effects of the treatment can take up to 21 days to become apparent, although many can see improvements in as few as 2 to 3 days after treatment.
